Gerbils originated in China, in Mongolia. They are very protective of there home and family, and will fight a stranger to the death. A normal family in the wild consists of an adult male and female and their pups. In Mongolia, they have to survive very harsh conditions. In the winter, it can get way below zero, while in the summer, it will get as high as 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Gerbils have many ways of defense. They are able to hear low frequency sounds, which enables them to hear their predators. They usually live in large groups, with a gerbil always standing watch for danger. If a gerbil spots danger, they with thump their feet, alerting other gerbils around them of danger. Also, they use their powerful hind legs to dodge many inches in the air to avoid a predator. They also are able to detach their tail if they need to. And lastly, they can play dead.
